Abstract
This study deals with the anticipatory abilities in writing a sentence based on
grammatical rules stimulated by clues in which 30 students of the second semester
were asked to complete chunked or incomplete sentences with different clues at
the end. There were two types of the chunked sentences namely Category 1 which
consisted of 10 simple incomplete sentences and Category 2 which consisted of
10 sentences with the contexts written at the beginning. The context was the
preliminary information for the subject of each sentence. Of the 300 sentences of
Category 1, the dominant sentence pattern was taken by Verb Phrase (37.6%)
followed by Sentence (19.3%) and, Noun Phrase (18%) where in the Category 2
also with 300 sentences, the dominant pattern was taken by Verb Phrase (84%)
followed by Sentence (10%) and Modal Verb Phrase (5%). There were more
verbs used in Category 2 (113 verbs) as compared with Category 1 (98 verbs).
The context led the students to produce more verbs. However, there were 25
similar verbs as the overlapping vocabulary between the two categories
