Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the types of elicitation techniques used, the methods employed by English teachers in using elicitation techniques, and the reasons why teachers use elicitation techniques in eight-grade at SMP Negeri 2 Pancur Batu. This research employed a qualitative approach, and the research instruments included an observation checklist and interview guidelines. Elicitation techniques are recognized and utilized by English teachers at SMP Negeri 2 Pancur Batu. Based on the results of this research, two types of elicitation techniques were identified and used by English teacher (1) asking questions and (2) asking questions combined with text and dialogue. The implementation of elicitation techniques occurred in both pre-teaching and whilstteaching activities. There are three reasons why English teacher use these techniques. (1) The teacher shifts the lesson to become learner-centered rather than teacher-centered. (2) Students are more likely to engage actively rather than passively listening to the teacher. (3) Students experience faster progress in their language abilities through increased practice, leading to greater confidence. Elicitation techniques provide students with opportunities to use and practice their existing knowledge, facilitated by English teachers, while also enhancing their interaction.
