Abstract

Mindset is one of the most important aspect that affect students’ school achievement. Unfortunately, Students have adopted a negative mindset: “English is not the Language of my Ancestors” for a long time. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the reason why this negative mindset is still exist among the students and what are the negative impacts of this negative mindset on the students’ English learning process for ninth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sitolu Ori. This study used a qualitative approach that contains descriptive data and the data were collected through interviews and observation. As a result, the existence of the negative mindset among the students is caused by the students’ beliefs and the students’ environment. In addition, the negative impacts felt by students are: students could not focus while learning, had low self-confidence, had no initiative to communicate, could not manage fear and lacked learning motivation.
