Abstract
Argumentation analysis was conducted on the film 'Passengers'. This article aimed to describe the types and patterns of argumentation in the film script 'Passengers'using the theoretical framework of Toulmin's Argumentation Pattern (TAP). This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with an analysis that revealed the existence of six elements of argumentation and argumentation patterns originating from the film script 'Passengers'. The results emerged with six elements of argumentation: Claim (36%), Data (37%), Warrant (4%), Support (15%), Rebuttal (6%), and Qualification (2%). Further investigation identified five argument patterns: the C-D (Data-Claim) element was recorded to dominate at 50%, followed by C-D-B (Claim-Data-Backing) at 23%, C-D-R (Claim-Data- Rebuttal) at 12%, C-D-W-B (Claim-Data-Warrant-Backing) at 6%, and C-D-W-Q (Claim-Data-Warrant-Qualification) at 9%. The most dominant ones were Claim (C) and Data (D). This was because there was a pattern consisting of claim and data elements in an essay. This pattern was the most basic pattern according to Toulmin, giving rise to a sentence containing a statement of stance on something followed by reasons or evidence, finding a pattern of argumentation that was the basis of the argument, and providing a deeper nuance to the audience's experience. The film "Passengers" effectively combined various types of argumentation to create rich and compelling narratives. This varying percentage distribution reflected the filmmakers' efforts to present balanced arguments, respond to potential counter-arguments, and provide depth and complexity to the messages they wished to convey through their stories.
