Abstract
The focuses of this study were to describe the types of love expression used by the
main characters, to describe the characterization of the main characters, and to
explain how love resolves the main conflict in the novel Reminders of Him. This
research applied the theory of love expressions by Gary Chapman (2015) and the
theory of Edgar V. Roberts (2010) to analyze both the characterization and the
resolution of conflict in the novel. The research method used for this research was
qualitative textual analysis, and the data was collected from the novel Reminders
of Him. The first findings showed that 251 sentences were indicated as love
expressions, which were divided into five types: 26 sentences of words of
affirmation, 8 sentences of quality time, 2 sentences of receiving gifts, 22
sentences revealing acts of service, and 193 sentences revealing physical touch.
Next, the second finding showed the characterization of Kenna and Ledger as the
main characters in the novel. There were 16 characterizations of Kenna, such as:
affectionate, depressed, forgiving, hard-working, hopeful, imaginative, introvert,
independent, kind, low self-esteem, overthinking, self-blaming, selfless, selfloathing,
strong and she suffered from panic attack. Meanwhile, there were 10
characterizations of Ledger: kind, affectionate, altruistic, brave, compassionate,
hard-working, helpful, kind, persistent, and nice. Finally, the third finding showed
that the act of service was acted by Ledger resolved the conflict in the novel.
