THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT OF TARA WESTOVER IN HER MEMOIR EDUCATED: A PSYCHOSOCIAL APPROACH

This study applied a psychological theory to analyze the main character in the
memoir Educated with the character name Tara Westover. This study aims to : (1)
find out each phase of life experienced by Tara Westover according to
psychosocial theory based on the memoir (2) analyze Tara Westover's character
development after experiencing each phase of psychosocial development in the
memoir Educated according to psychosocial theory. This study uses a
psychological approach with Erick Erikson's psychosocial theory. The data source
for this research is Tara Westover's memoir Educated, published by Random
House with ISBN 978-0399590504. Data were obtained by reading and notetaking
techniques. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The results of
this study are as follows: (1) The psychosocial phases passed by Tara Westover as
the main character in the memoir Educated, namely the preschooler, schooler,
youth, and Young Adulthood phases (2) In the preschooler phase, Tara Westover
is dominated by a sense of Initiative, in the schooler phase, Tara Westover is
dominated by feelings of Inferiority, in the Adolescence phase, she is dominated
by Identity, and in the Young Adulthood phase, the main character is dominated
by Intimacy.
