THE USE OF COLOR CODING STRATEGY IN TEACHING WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT FOR THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 57 MEDAN

The objectives of this study were to explore how the color coding strategy is used in teaching writing descriptive text and determine the teacher’s difficulties using color coding strategy in teaching writing descriptive text. The study was conducted using descriptive qualitative method, and the English teacher of SMP Muhammadiyah 57 Medan was the subject of this study. The data collection techniques were interview, video recording, and observation. The results of the study displayed that the use of color coding strategy was successful, which was implemented following the instructions from Ewold and Morgan (2017, P. 177). It was also found that there were difficulties the teacher faced in using color coding strategy, such as (1) the teacher cannot form small groups but large groups, which is contrary to theory, and it happened because the accessibility of students is restricted, (2) the time needed by teacher to use color coding strategies was a lot. Thus, it requires teacher to maximize time to be efficient and effective, (3) the teacher could not move on to the next procedure because students experienced confusion and misunderstanding when identifying detailed sentences and explanatory sentences based on the colors specified in the third procedure.
