Abstract

This research is about analyzing the difficulties of class XI students at SMAN2 Tanjung Balai in learning to listen. The aim of this research was to investigate the difficulties experienced by class XI students of SMAN 2 Tanjung Balai in
learning to listen. This research used qualitative techniques to collect data. This research data was taken by observation and by conducting interviews with class XI students at SMAN2 Tanjung Balai. In analyzing data, researchers use data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusions and verification. This research uses Underwood's theory where in this theory there are seven difficulties in
learning to listen, namely: Cultural Difference, Quality of Recorded Material, Unrecognized Vocabulary, Listening Length and Speed, Physical Conditions Noise Problem, and Lack of Concentration. The difficulties that are more often experienced by students are, Cultural Difference, Unrecognized Vocabulary Noise Problem, and Lack of Concentration, and the reason is because students do not
master vocabulary so that the listening learning process is hampered, and then differences in intonation and pronunciation in pronouncing sentences from the speaker become the reason. students find it difficult to learn to listen.
