Abstract

Headline was intended to highlight the main point or category of the news article. This research discussed the rhetoric on market issues in headline news of CNBC Indonesia. The objectives of this study are to examine the types of rhetoric on market issues used in the headline news of CNBC Indonesia, to analyze the realization of rhetoric in formal structures of discourse, and to explain the reason for rhetoric realized in the headline news. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this research. The data sources were headline news on market issues and taken from the website of CNBC Indonesia. There were 300 of 7076 selected headlines in November 2022 – February 2023. The data were analyzed by using Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis framework. The findings showed that there are 25 types of rhetoric. It was identified that rhetoric was not limited to alliteration, rhyme, parallelism, hyperbole, understatement, metaphor, and metonymy (Van Dijk, 1991). Hyperbole is the most type used in writing the headline on market issues. Besides, it was found that several agents were written implicitly in both sentence forms by using rhetoric. The agent in the headline was omitted to avoid the reporting of negative news. The reason of rhetoric is realized in the headline is to persuade the market players in shaping their market decisions, to hide the participants by substituting to another term, to frame the perspective towards participants, and to engage the knowledge in perceiving the distinctive information on market issues.
