Abstract
This study focused on developing motion pictures as a media for teaching speaking
skill. The aim of this study was to develop motion pictures as a media for teaching
speaking skill to the seventh grade students of junior high school. This study was
conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages;
gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by
experts, revising, and final product. The subjects of this study were the seventh
grade students at SMP Negeri 35 Medan. The data were gathered by administering
interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 32 respondents to get
the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students
need Motion Pictures as a media which can help them to understand about speaking
descriptive text. The finding of this study showed that the researcher has developed
Motion Pictures that consists of 25 slides with 3 main parts such as the definition
of descriptive text, the components of descriptive text and several exercises that can
be used to comprehend the students understanding about descriptive text. Motion
Pictures have been validated by two validators, one from State University of Medan
and one from SMP Negeri 35 Medan. Motion Pictures have the average percentage
was 89, 6% and it categorized as very good
