Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe gender relations that are
constructed by inang-inang with their husbands in Toba Batak domestic life in
Medan. The method used descriptive qualitative by taking informants in
the study. Although the Batak Toba culture rooted in patrilineal kinship
system which has a tendency to patriarchy, but when faced by the realities of
domestic life and the family in some cases, there was the male feminist. Male
feminist is played both by the husband and the boys in the household and
the inang-inang family. Flexibility occurs (resilience) to adjust the gender
roles in the household and their families. The roles of domestic and public
could be exchanged, especially in achieving the mission Batak Toba culture
which is hagabeon (blessed by descent), hamaraon (wealth) and hasangapan
(honor). They also show the life pattern formation toward an egalitarian
pattern of relationships in the household, the family and society.
