Abstract
The aims of this study were to find out the kinds of meaning equivalence in the translation of Acehnese Proverbs into Indonesian, and to describe the rules of proverbs translated in contextual meaning equivalence from Acehnese Proverbs into Indonesian. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study was Acehnese proverbs that were translated from Acehnese language into Indonesian by Hasjim M.K. at all (1977) on a book of “Peribahasa Aceh” as the source of data. Besides that, informants were needed to validate the data. The data was analyzed by using Modification of Accuracy Rating Instrument (Kurnianingtyas, 2008) to find the meaning equivalence and the ways to translate a proverb based on Beekman and Callow (1974: 139). The results of this study were (1) There were three kinds of meaning equivalence in the translation of Acehnese Proverbs into Indonesian namely equivalence (68%), almost equivalence (23%) and non equivalence (9%), (2) The dominant meaning equivalence in the translation of Acehnese Proverbs into Indonesian was equivalence (68%), and (3) The rules of proverbs translated in contextual meaning equivalence from Acehnese Proverbs into Indonesian namely (a) the words following the proverb could be introduced as the meaning of the proverb, (b) it can be replaced with an equivalent local proverb and (c) its non-figurative meaning could be stated straight forward.
