Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze the speech acts that occur in the pasahat adat
na gok in batak toba ceremony. This study was analyzed using Searle's (1979)
speech act theory. Conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of
this study were taken from the recording of the pasahat adat na gok ceremony.
Data sources are taken from conversations between Raja parhata of traditional
events. The writer found 139 utterances that contain illocutionary acts, which
consist of 64 utterances (46.1%) assertives, 53 utterances (38.1 %) directives,
and 22 utterances (15.8 %) expressive. Declaratives and commissives are not
found in the ceremony, this is because pasahat adat na gok is an ceremony that is
done to pay customs to the families of the bride and groom, so utterances that are
vowing, declare and offer are not included in this ceremony. Pasahat adat na gok
in batak toba ceremony illustrates how Batak people use speech acts as a way to
transmit information, opinions, and feelings to each other, also strengthen family
relationships and maintain ties of brotherhood.
