Needs Identification of 2nd Semester Student of German Department in Speaking

This research is a preliminary research for a learning media development. This type of research is survey research. The object of the research is the second semester students of the German department at the State University of Medan and a lecturer who teaches speaking subjects. Data collection techniques were carried out by distributing questionnaires, interviews, and surveys. The survey results stated that the second semester students speaking ability score did not reach the expected learning outcomes. Students mid-semester test scores are found to be very low, with 20% getting A, 20% for B, 33% for C and 27% for E. Although only 27% obtained the category of failing in speaking ability, if compared with the level of difficulty on the International Standard B1 exam, a C score on the result, it could be categorized as failing the B1 exam. Likewise, with the results of the Semester Final Exam scores. Based on the results of the questionnaire on students, data was obtained, the lack of interactive media in learning. The opportunities for students to practice hands-on are very limited due to the large number of classes. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an interactive learning media.
