Abstract
Teaching strategy is a sequence of activities that systematic, general patterns of teacher activities that include about the sequence of learning activities, the order of achieving the goals that have been specified. The objective of the research is: to identify the strategies used by the English teachers in teaching speaking class. The research methodology in this research is a descriptive-qualitative design. The subject of the research is two teachers who teach English at the tenth grade of SMK Mandiri. Ur the strategies in teaching speaking that are: use the group work, based on activities on easy language, give instruction or training in discussion skills, and keep students to speak the target language. The techniques of collecting the data in this research are: observation and doing interview with English teachers. The findings showed that the first teacher applied three strategies by Ur (1996) in teaching speaking descriptive text, they were (1) use the group work, (2) give some intructions or training in discussion skills, (3) keep students to speak the target language. Meanwhile the second teacher applied two strategies; they were (1) base activity on easy language and (2) keep students to speak the target language. The English teacher should know the appropriate strategy for their students.
