Abstract
This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the readability of reading texts in English textbook Bahasa Inggris for the tenth grade students’ of SMA Harvard Medan. This study was categorized as Descriptive quantitative research. The subject was the texts in the textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris for Grade X, published by Yrama Widya which consisted of 14 reading texts, it contains 2 transactional interaction texts (personal letters), 1 interpersonal interaction text, 3 descriptive texts, 2 announcement texts, 4 recount texts (2 recount texts and 2 biography texts), and 2 narrative texts (folktales). The instrument to collect the data was using document analysis. Fry Readability Formula was used to analyze the data from textbook. The result of this research that 14 texts have different levels of readability. The analysis showed that two transactional interaction texts (personal letters), one interpersonal interaction text, three descriptive texts, two recount texts, two narrative texts falls into the lower grade while two announcement texts, two recount texts falls into the higher grade. The findings of this research that from overall texts, the meeting point of the average sentences and syllables falls in the area grade level 8. In other words, reading texts in the textbook are fairly easy for the tenth grade students since most of the texts fall into the lower grade than they should be. So, English teachers are suggested to analyze the texts readability before selecting a textbook.
