Abstract
This study aims to analyze the types of teacher’s initiation used by the teacher in classroom interaction for eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Medan. The data of this research were utterances taken from the interaction between English teacher and the students during teaching learning process. The data were collected for one meeting/week, there were 34 students for eighth grade students that had research and collected data through observation, audio, video recording, transcription and interview. This study found that eight types of teacher initiation those were teacher elicit (50%) , teacher inform (4.54%), teacher direct (3.89%), boundary (11.68%), re-initiation (i) (18.18%) , re-initiation- (ii) (2.59%), listing (5.19%), and check (3.89%). And the most dominant types of teacher’s initiation was teacher elicit (50%). There were the reasons of the most dominant initiation in classroom interaction, namely: it could evaluate students’ understanding, create an active classroom interaction, and increasing vocabulary.
