Slang Words Formation Processes In An Instagram Account

The thesis dealt with the slang words formation processes used in an Instagram account. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of word formation processes that occur in the slang words used in an Instagram account, to elaborate the factors influencing the use of slang words, and to describe the reason of the slang words used in 9Gag instagram account.The study was conducted by using descriptivequalitative method. The data were taken from the follower’s comment of 9Gag Instagram account. The data were analyzed based on the theory proposed by Yule (2010). The findings indicated that there were 92 slang words used in 9Gag Instagram account, they were clipping 24 utterances, coinage 21 utterances, compounding 12 utterances, acronym 11 utterances, blending 10 utterances, multiple processes 5 utterances, borrowing 4 utterances, conversion 3 utterances, and derivation 2 utterances. There were some factors causing the use of slang such as social status, age, social distance or familiarity and situation.There were some reasons of using slang words such as to induce either friendliness or familiar, for ease social interaction, to enrich the language, and to joke.
