Figures of Speech on Political Headline: Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru Newspaper

This research deals with the figures of speech used in political headline: Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru newspaper. The objectives of this study are to investigate the types of figures of speech found in the Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru newspaper, to elaborate the function of figures of speech used in political headline. Qualitative descriptive research was applied. The data source was taken from the both newspaper they are Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru from January to March 2021. There are 336 political headlines in Waspada and 166 political headlines in Sinar Indonesia Baru. Waspada’s newspaper are choosen randomly as well as Sinar Indonesia Baru’s newspaper. To take the political headline is used percentage namely 100 percent of Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru Newspaper. The researcher takes 100 percent of it as the data namely 12 political headlines in Waspada and 12 political headlines in Sinar Indonesia Baru (SIB) newspaper. Documentary technique is applied in collecting the data. The instrument for collecting the data is documentary sheet from the both newspapers. The data were analysed by using Mile and Huberman’s data analysis. The findings show that there are 4 types of figures of speech are found in the Waspada namely: symbol, irony, paradox, and personification and 4 types of figures of speech are found in Sinar Indonesia Baru (SIB) newspaper namely: symbol, hyperbole/overstatement, apostrophe, and synecdoche. The researcher found in the both newspapers that the types of figures of speech symbol appears the most dominant often on political headline. It is found that Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru made political headline as the phrase used for dramatic effect and used out of their literal meaning to add emotional intensity. The function of figures of speech in Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru are to add emotional intensity, to say much in a brief compass and to give imaginative pleasure.
