Abstract
The research dealt with speech functions. Speech function is an action or performance by language user that used to fulfill the intention of the speakers and listeners. This study was aimed at investigating: (1) to the types of speech functions used by male and female tour guides in their touring interactions (2) to describe how the speech functions realized in mood (3) to elaborate the reason why the speech functions realized in mood as the way they are. This study was conducted in a qualitative research. The data were the clauses of speech function used by a male and a female tour guides in their touring interaction with the tourists. In order to identify the speech function used by male and female tour guides, Halliday (2014) framework of types and realization of speech function was used as well as Lakoff (1975) identify the speech function based on their gender, marks out the difference characteristics the language of women and men. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) the types of speech functions that have been found in male and female tour guides in their touring interaction with the tourists are statement, question, command, offer, and minor. The most dominant speech function found is statement. The male tour guide for twice recording of touring used statement is utilized 843 times (78.6%) while in the side of female tour guide for twice recording of touring used statement is utilized 522 times (76.8%). (2) For the realization of speech functions of male and female tour guides, there are two ways that have been found in realization of speech functions of male and female tour guides in mood, namely, typical clause mood (congruent), and non-typical clause mood (incongruent or metaphor). (3) For the reason in realization of speech function of male and female tour guides in their touring interactions, in this study, the researcher found because of situational context that is tenor. It occurs because the priority of the tour guides interaction is giving information to the tourists in informal situation. The power is unequal power. The intensity of contact is infrequent contact. And the affect in the touring interactions shows positive because they were freely to express their likeness by laughing or joking one each other.
