Abstract

This research aims to know the comparison of learning outcomes and retention between students taught with Video and Visual Image Media in Tissue Culture in Grade XI IPA SMA Negeri 5 Medan Academic Year 2018/2019. This type of research was quasi experiment. The research sample was taken by random sampling. There were two classes taken as samples of the research. They were class XI IPA 2, which consisted of 31 students as Experiment Class I and class XI IPA 3, with 31 students as Experimental Class II. The instruments used to collect the data in this research were student learning outcomes and retention tests in the form of multiple choices consisting of 40 validated questions. The results showed that the average score of learning outcomes of students taught using video media was 80.72 and the retention score of 80.40 was better than the learning outcomes of students who were taught using visual image media, in which the score was 75.72 and a retention score was 74.67. Hypothesis testing analysis using t test and confidence level α = 0.05 shows that tcount was higher than ttable (4.42> 2.00) and retention (4.85> 2.00), which means that in this study H0 is rejected while Ha is accepted. Thus it can be concluded that there are differences in learning outcomes and retention of students taught using Videos and Visual Images Media on sub-material Tissue Culture in class XI IPA SMA Negeri 5 Medan Academic Year 2018/2019.
