Abstract

This study dealt with Speech Function, Mood, and Tenor used in Moses’s dialogue. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The study aimed: (1) to find out the types of Speech Function used in the dialogue, (2) it’s coding in Mood and (3) to investigate how social interaction or tenor configuration affected the use of speech function based on Halliday’s and Eggin’s perspective. The data of this study were the utterances of Moses taken from some selected verses of Al Quran. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) the types of Speech Function used by Moses in the dialogue were statement, question, offer, and command. (2) Statement, question, and command were sequentially coded in declarative, interrogative, and imperative, while Offer which has no unmarked realization of Mood coded in both declarative and interrogative. It means speech function was coded congruently in mood. (3) The equality in status, the close relation, most low affective involvement, and most frequent contact (tenor) between Moses and his interlocutors caused the Speech Function coded in the way they were.
