Abstract
This study concerns on the development of English listening skill materials for grade ten students majoring in Culinary Art of vocational school at SMK Negeri 8 Medan. The objective of this study is to develop English listening skill materials for grade ten students majoring in culinary art of vocational school through 2013 Curriculum. The research procedures of this study were Research and Development (R & D) though six stages; 1) Gathering information and data, 2) Analyzing data, 3) Designing new listening materials, 4) Validating new listening materials, 5) Revising new listening materials, 6) Revising-developing listening materials (final product). The research was conducted at SMK Negeri 8 Medan. The subject of this research was class X.2-Culinary art consisting of 32 students. The instruments for collecting the data used in this research were observation, questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 32 respondents to get the students’ needs. The result of questionnaire and interview showed that the students need English listening materials which appropriate to their vocational competence that is Culinary Art program. Thus, the result of this study was a supplementary material of English listening materials based on 2013 Curriculum which include three chapters. They are Something Big is Coming!: Announcment; True Stories Really Happened!: Recount Text; and Which way do I go to get to...?: Expression Direction. Each chapter consists of Warm-up, Input New Knowledge, Vocabulary Builder and Check Your Progress. Based on the experts’ judgement result, the score was 92 and 93 among 81-100 which was categorized as very good refered to Dirgeyasa (2011).
