Abstract
The present study seeks to analyze the loss and gain applied in bilingual online news text. The
objectives of the study are 1) to find the categories of loss and gain applied in the bilingual
online news text, 2) the realization in bilingual online news text, and 3) The reason loss and gain
occur in the process of translation. The study is based upon on descriptive qualitative method
which comparing Source Text and Target Text. The data related to this research were collected
through document research, in which information and findings related to research problems were
collected through theoretical references. The data of this study were sentences consist of all loss
and gain found in bilingual news articles taken from berita2bahasa.com. Ten online news
articles taken from berita2bahasa.com are used as sources of data. The results showed that there
are seven kinds of loss and gain found on bilingual online news text, they are word loss, phrase
loss, clause loss, word gain, phrase gain, and clause gain. It shows that phrase loss is mostly
occurred in the news texts. The results also revealed different strategies of loss and gain realized
in the texts, such as addition of information, deletion of information, and structure Adjustment.
Deletion information is mostly occurred in the news text in order to avoid redundancy in the
news text by omitting the information that is not vital enough to the development of the text and
also to justify the distraction for reader with lengthy explanation. The study also noted that the
implementation of loss and gain in news text is to achieve naturalness in translation by using
