Abstract

The objective of the study is to prepare adsorbent of the mixed natural zeolite and active charcoal of corncob to be used as water purifier and know the effect of the varying composition of zeolite and active charcoal of corncob on percentage of adsorbent porosity.Preparation of adsorbent is made by sublimating natural zeolite into 200 mesh particles and purifying it until resulting in a pure zeolite. As resulted in the pure zeolite, it is then characterized by XRD analysis test. Furthermore, the corncob is charcoaled and activated at 600°C. These both materials are mixed with the varying zeolite and active charcoal of corncob (90:10, 70:30, 60:40 50:50, 40:60, 30:70, and 20:80) in percentage by treatment of the same sintering temperature of 600°C. For the generated sample, porosity test is done and followed by the adsorption test of metal content of wafer, viscosity and pH of water and to know the changes in the water samples pre and post purification. The result of the study showed that the type of mineral composing the natural zeolite used in the present study included sacrofanite. The peak occurring at 20 included 20.3557; 28.4623 as the peak of sacrofanite with the crystal structure of hexagonal and it has lattice parameters of a = b = 12.89 A° and c = 74.21A°, so that it can be concluded that the stone is zeolite one. For sampling test, the increase in composition percentage of active charcoal of corncob in 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70% and 80% resulted in the increase in porosity. For adsorption test, before purification, the pH level is of 8.3, F= 0.13 mg/l and Mn = 0.013 mg/l, and after adsorbing with the sample, the pH level ranges 7.4 - 8.1, F ranges (<0.01 - 0.31) mg/l, Mn ranges 0.001 — 0.210 mg/l, meaning there is a significantly increase in adsorption, and for viscosity, chloride is also in normal. The best sample for decrease in metal content includes 80% active charcoal, 66.32% in porosity and the sintering temperature of 600°C.
