Abstract
The thesis deals with the politeness strategies used by Karonese in Ceremony of Mengket Rumah Mbaru. The objectives of this study were to categorize types of positive and negative politeness strategies, and the reasons of using positive and negative politeness strategies. The study was conducted by using desccriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were utterances spoken by rakut sitelu, mainly; Kalimbubu, Sukut, and Anakberu. The data analysis involved trancribing, indentifying and clasifying the data. The data were analyzed to Brown and Levinson (1987).The findings indacted that there were 2 types of politeness strategies used in Mengket Rumah Mbaru, they were Positive Politeness (68 utterances), and Negative Politeness (37 utterances). And the use of positive and negative politeness because karo people appreciate each other and keep the feeling when talking with each other person.
