Abstract
The research deals with subtitling strategies used in The Meg movie texts. The
objectives of this study were: (1) to describe the types of subtitling strategies used
in The Meg movie texts. (2) to elaborate how the subtitling strategies realized in
the clauses of The Meg movie texts, and (3) to explain the reason of utilizing
subtitling strategies in The Meg movie texts. The research methodology used in
the research is qualitative research design. The data were clauses. The data were
collected through documentary technique. The data were analyzed by using
interactive model of qualitative data management and analysis namely data
collection, data condensation, data display and verification and conclusion. The
findings of this study revealed that: (1). There were ten types of subtitling
strategies based on Haryanto’s theory in The Meg Movie Texts namely Expansion
(2.1%), Paraphrase (21.3%), Transfer (40.6%), Imitation (8.7%), Transcription
(1.0%), Condensation (6.8%), Decimation (0.7%), Deletion (7.3%), Taming
(0.2%), Resignation (1.5%) and the researcher found four other types of subtitling
strategies namely Abbreviation (0.7%), Dislocation (0.7%), Culturally (1.5%)
and Peyoration (0.2%). The realization of subtitling strategies in the clauses of
The Meg movie texts consist of two groups consists of double strategies and triple
strategies. For the double strategies namely Imitation and Deletion (1.8%),
Imitation and Paraphrase (2.6%), Imitation and Expansion (0.2%), Imitation and
Resignation (0.2%) and Imitation and Condensation (0.2%). And also, there were
2 types of subtitling strategies that used by translator called triple strategies,
namely Deletion, Expansion and Resignation (0.2%) and Imitation, Expansion
and Paraphrase (0.2%). (3) Based on the reasons of translator used subtitling
strategies in The Meg Movie Texts consisted of historical circumstances,
traditions and the strategy to which is accustomed for both the source and the
target viewer. The conclusion: (1) the subtitling strategies that analyzed in form of
clauses and also as the research data mostly focused on Transfer. (2). multiple
strategies in The Meg movie texts consist of double and triple strategies. Double
strategies that found in the clauses mainly focused on Imitation but also associated
with Paraphrase. Meanwhile, for triple strategies it also focused on Imitation but
different from double strategies, it associated with other strategies namely
Expansion and Paraphrase. (3).The strategy to which is accustomed for both the
source and the target viewer as the focused on translator reason used subtitling
strategies in The Meg movie texts.
