FLOUTING MAXIM BY GOVERNOR CANDIDATES OF NORTH SUMATERA IN ELECTION DEBATE 2018

This study deals with the flouting maxim used by Governor candidates of North
Sumatera in Election debate 2018. The objectives of the study were 1) to find out
the types of flouting maxim used by governor candidates of North Sumatera in the
election debate, 2) elaborate the ways of flouting maxim used by governor
candidates of North Sumatera in the election debate and 3) explain why flouting
maxim used by governor candidates the election debate. The study applied
descriptive qualitative research. The data were utterances of the candidates
downloaded from website www.youtube.com. The researches was found that
there were four types of flouting maxim used by the candidates as flouting maxim
of quantity (43,1%), flouting maxim of quality (13,8%), flouting maxim of
manner (25,9%) and flouting maxim of relevance (17,2%). The realization of
flouting maxim while the speakers less information, irrelevance response and
saying ambigious response in their statement. The last was the reason for flouting
maxim because the candidates gave implicitly response to hearer in their response.
Each candidate gave the implied meaning in their response because candidates
knew that they were as a rival in this debate in order to get a chance as a Governor
in North Sumatera.
