Abstract
This research deals with Modality as Hedging Devices in the US Presidential
Election Debate Between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton . The objectives of
this research were: (1) to investigate the modality as hedging devices used the US
presidential election debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton (2) to
describe the realization of modality as hedging devices used in the debate (3) to
explain the the reasons of modality as hedging devices used the debate . The
research was a descriptive qualitative research. The data were the utterances
consisting modality as hedging devices uttered by Donald Trump and Hillary
Clinton. The findings of this study showed that : 1) It was found that epistemic
modality as the type of modality as hedging devices in the debate ; 2) It was found
that the modality as hedging device was mostly realized by modal auxilary verbs
by both candidates in the debate; 3) it was found that Mitigating Claims of by
Showing Some Kind of Uncertainty as the most dominant reason of modality as
hedging devices by both candidates in the debate.
