MEANING EQUIVALENCE IN ABDULLAH YUSUF ALI’S TRANSLATION OF SURAH AL – WAQIAH INTO INDONESIAN

The aims of this study wereto find out the kinds of meaning equivalence in
Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s translation of Surah al – Waqiah from English into
Indonesian, and to describe the rules of Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s traslated in
contextual meaning equivalence of Surah al – Waqiah from English into
Indonesian, and to describe the ways Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s translated Surah al –
Waqiah from English into Indonesian. The research was conducted by using
qualitative descriotive design. The data of this study was Holy Qur’an Surah al –
Waqiah 1 – 96 ayahs that translated into Indonesian (2012). Besides that,
informants were needed to validate data. The data was analyzed by using
Modification of Accuracy Rating Instrument (Kurnianingtyas, 2008) to find the
meaning equivalence and the ways to translate a Holy Qur’an based on
Muhammad Husain Al Zahabi (1983) and ways Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s translated
Surah al – Waqiah based on Larson (1998). The result of this study were (1) There
werethree kinds of meaning equivalence in the translation of Surah al – Waqiah
from English into Indonesian namely equivalence (62,5%), almost equivalence
(26%) and non equivalence (11,5%), (2) The rules of Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s
translated in contextual meaning equivalence from English into Indonesian
namely (a) tarjamah al – harfiyyah, (b) tarjamah al – tafsiriyyah, (3) The ways
Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s tranlated Surah al – Waqiah namely (a) literal translation,
