TRANSLATION SHIFT IN THE ENGLISH VERSION OF THE RECITATIONS OF THE HOLY BOOK IN THE MUSABAQAH TILAWATIL QURAN

The aims of this study were to describe the shifts, the ways, and the reasons occur in
English Version of the Recitation of the Holy Book in the Musabaqah Tilawatil
Quran, and to find out the dominant shifts are used in English Version of the
Recitation of the Holy Book in the Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran. The research was
conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study was clause,
phrase, word, and sentence in English Version of the Recitation of the Holy Book in
the Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran as the source of data. The data was analyzed by
using Cartford’s Theory (1978) to find the translation shifts and the reasons of
translation shift based on Wong and Shen (2017). The findings showed that (1)
There were four kinds of category shifts used in English Version of the Recitation of
the Holy Book in the Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran namely structure shift, class shift,
unit shift and intra system shift, where the dominant shift used was unit shift (53 %):.
(2) There were four ways of translation shift used in the English version of the
recitation of the Holy Book in Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran, namely the change of
grammatical structure, the change of class of one part of speech to another, the
change of different rank (upward and downward), and the change in the concept of
tense, where the dominant one way was the change of different rank (53 %): word to
sentence (67.5 %), word to phrase (30 %), phrase to word (1.25 %), and word to
morpheme (1.25 %), and (3) There were three reasons behind the occurrence of
Translation Shift in the English version of the recitation of the Holy Book in
Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran namely linguistic factors, cultural factors, and personal
factors.
