Abstract

Kacang tunggak (Vigna unguiculata L) is a type of legume plant whose young pods and seeds are usually sown, such as vegetable lodeh or brongkos. This plant is relatively dry and usually planted in the yard as a family food reserve. Cowpea has many variations in shape. On Java, these beans
are known by several names such as dadap beans, landes beans, cowpea, and otok beans and tolo nuts. up to 2.5 m long, pods with an average length of 7.5 - 45 cm. The Kacang tunggak seeds are elliptical, dark red, black or white and have a bend in the middle. Besides being tolerant of
drought, cowpea is also able to bind nitrogen from the air. Potential results of Kacang tunggak are quite high, reaching 1.5 - 2.0 tons / ha which is very determined by the variety. The purpose of this study was to obtain plant identity of Kacang tunggak (Vigna unguiculata L) based on the morphological (number, shape) characteristics of chromosomes. Chromosomes are threads that are present in the cell nucleus that function to carry DNA that is innate and contains most of the information for cell regulation activities. From the results of observations obtained chromosomes can be seen in the phase of Profase ,. While the number of chromosomes obtained by comparing the references is 2n = 22 chromosomes.
