Abstract
The main objectives of this research were to describe the types of deixis found in the Senior High School English textbooks, to find out the most dominant types of the deixis in the Senior High School English textbooks, and to mention the reason why the English textbooks use the deixis frequently. The design of the research was based on content analysis. The subject of the research is the students English textbooks used of the Grade XI of the State Senior High School 21 Medan. 5 publishers taken as samples, they were Erlangga, Gelora Aksara, Grafindo, Yudistira, and Arm ico. The data of this study were collected by applying the documentary technique. To analyse the data, the writer used Krippendorffs theory, such as: identifying, defining, analyzing, classifying, and finding. The findings of the study indicate that; a) there are 5 types of deixis used in the Senior High School English textbooks. They are temporal, spatial, social, person, and discourse. b) the most dominant type of deixis is person, and c) deixis are frequently used in the English textbooks because they are concerned with grammatical reason.
