Abstract
This study was aimed at identifying the types of the Interpersonal Metaphor of Mood used in Royal Letters of Sumateran Malay and the reason why the writers used mood metaphor to express their messages. This study was
conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was taken from a book , in a book authored by Mu’jizah, entitled “Iluminasi dalam Surat-Surat Melayu Abad ke-18 dan ke-19”. The results of this research showed that written text can be analyzed by using Interpersonal
Metaphor theory and found there was only 1 type of mood metaphor used in the transcript of the royal letters which is Statement Mood Metaphor. The reason why the translator used statement mood metaphor was that to politely express their message and intimate the relation between the kingdoms.
