DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING MATERIALS FOR GRADE X STUDENTS OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING AND NETWORK AT SMKN 1 PERCUT SEI TUAN

This study aimed to develop English reading materials for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this research was Grade X students of Computer Engineering and Network in SMKN 1 Percut Sei Tuan, Sumatera Utara consisting of 32 students. The data of this study were English Reading materials for Grade X of SMKN 1 Percut Sei Tuan. Qualitative data consist of syllabus and existing teaching materials. Instrument for collecting data questionnaire, interview, and existing material. After analyzing the data, the students’ needs were elaborated in learning English in term of vocation that they have through questionnaires. After the developing of teaching materials was related to the vocation that they have through questionnaires. After the students’ need had been analyzed the new reading materials were developed. The developing of teaching materials was related to the vocation that the students had. It was Computer Engineering and Network. The new English reading materials have been validated by experts. The average scores were 93 from the English lecturer and 98 from subject teacher. It means the new English reading materials as categorized as relevant or appropriate for Grade X of Computer Engineering and Network in SMKN 1 Percut Sei Tuan. The new English reading materials were designed to find the students’ need especially in learning reading. Then the new English reading materials will be implemented in the school as recommended materials.
