STUDENT`S TRANSLATION OF THEME AND RHEME FROM ENGLISH TO INDONESIAN

This study aims at finding the students' problem in translating English into Indonesian based on theme and rheme. The study uses Descriptive Qualitative Research which focuses on the natural characteristics of data because the researcher describes and elaborates the findings why the result of translating by students still dominantly they did not translate accurately and made errors in translation of theme and rheme. To obtain the data, twenty sentences of clause in declarative sentences were given to the students and the students were asked to translate them into Indonesian. Furthermore, five interview questions were given to the students to be answered about they are difficulties in translating theme and rheme. The subject of this study were the tenth grade students SMA N 2 Sibolga. After analyzing the data, it was found that most of the students (65%) translated the theme and rheme incorrectly or ignored theme as the starting point a message and the others (35%) translated the theme and rheme correctly. Furthermore, it
was found that students' concept of translating theme and rheme have two kinds,namely: the translation of theme does not contribute to the essence of overall meaning and the translation of theme does contribute or important to the essence . of overall meaning. After that, the responses to the interview indicate that the students focused the meaning translation from Source language (SL) into Target Language (TL) often was overlap to translate theme and rheme. They translated
the sentences based on the principle of translating process in Indonesian language although they should apply the concept of theme and rheme of metafunctions. It happened because they did not have a good background in translating theme and rheme in declarative text .
