Abstract
The focus of this paper is on the politeness in karonese language, i.e., in the wedding ceremony “Nganting Manuk”. The data were collected by participant observation. The analysis was based on the theory prposed by Levinson and Yule. The results showed that the moves of participants’ turn taking were special politeness strategies, which are unavailable in Levinson and Yule’s theory. In fact, politeness also appeared in the use of pronouns, greetings, inderect speech, and special phrases such as ‘uga nge’, and ‘ega ninta’. The kind and strategy of politeness in the wedding ceremony more frequently used were of negative politeness compared with those o the positive one.
