Abstract
This study aims to find out the method used in translating English hymn song lyrics into Batak Toba language. The data analyzed using the theory of Peter Newmark, that explained two approaches in translating texts, namely source language emphasis and target language emphasis, which then explained there were eight methods of translation word-for-word translation; literal translation; faithful translation; semantic translation; adaptation; free translation; idiomatic translation; and communicative translation. In analyzing the data, the research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the book of Batak Toba hymn song namely Buku Ende contains 864 translations of hymns from various languages. There are 43 lyrics of English translation songs that come with the Language source information which is then used as data. The findings of the study showed that only three methods were used in translating the hymns lyrics. From the data that has been analyzed, the translator uses adaptation method (65.12%), followed by the communicative translation method (20.93%) and the last is free translation (13.95%). These results indicate that the adaptation method is the most commonly used method of translating hymns lyrics.
