DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING MATERIAL FOR GRADE 2 OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS USING SCHEME-BASED APPROACH AT SMK NEGERI 2 MEDAN

This study aims to find out the target need and learning needs of the students and to develop English reading material for grade 2 students of Mechanical Engineering study program at SMK Negeri 2 Medan. This research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six phases: gathering information and data, need analysis, designing the material, validating, material evaluation, and final draft. The research was conducted at SMK Negeri 2 Medan in grade 2 of Mechanical Engineering students. The data were gathered by distributing questionnaire to 25 students to get the students’ needs and administrating interview to English teacher. The result proves that the students need English based on Scheme-Based approach, Curriculum, Syllabus, and students’ study program. The development material was English reading material especially in procedure text by using scheme based approach. Where by using Scheme-based approach, students will use their background knowledge to comprehend the text. The unit that provided is Could You Tell Me the Way?. The product has been validated by experts. The average scores are 4, 30 from an English lecturer and 4, 20 an English teacher. It means the development material categorized as relevant or appropriate for students in grade 2 of Mechanical Engineering study program at SMK Negeri 2 Medan.
