Abstract
Filipinos wherever they go, have their own capacities to create their own varieties of language and easily tends to used code-mixing in order for them to be more accepted to particular norm in the society. This study deals to find out code-mixing of Filipino in Medan, Indonesia. The objectives of the research were to find (1) the types of code-mixing of Filipino in Medan. (2) The ways of code-mixing of Filipino in Medan. (3) The reasons why the Filipino in Medan did code-mix. The source of this research is the Filipino people who live in Medan. This research applied qualitative research design. It examines the types of code-mix uttered by Filipinos in the city. The extensive speech data presented here are recorded, and observed the subject through social gathering and pertinent occasions such as birthday party, wedding anniversary, graduation celebration and casual meetings wherein Filipinos gathered. The results revealed that (1) the types of Code-mixing of Filipino in Medan are (i) word insertion; the word insertion were subcategorized into seven which were word, phrase, hybrid clause, reduplication, Idioms, clause and tag insertion (ii) alternation and (iii) Congruent lexicalization. Congruent lexicalizations were also subcategorized into three such as intra-sentential mixing, intra lexical code-mixing and involving a change of pronunciation. (2) The ways that Filipino code-mix are are (i) Tag+Lish (ii) Tag+B.Indo+Bis (iii) Tag+Eng+Bis (iv) Tag+B.Indo. (v) B.Indo+Bis+lish (vi)Tag+B.Indo+lish. (3) There are nine reasons Filipino does code-mix. (1) To maintain the Uniqueness of Identity. (2) To prolong interaction in order to maintain the continuity of interaction. (3) They wanted to develop some kind of privacy. (4) They want to create an identity. (5) They repeat to add an emphasis. (6) Absence of relevance Word. (7) Pride of identity.(8) Bilingualism or Multilingual (9)They felt they were competitive workers abroad.
