Abstract
The research dealt with culture-specific items. The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the classification of culture-specific items in Negeri 5 Menara, (2) to describe the strategies used to translate the culture-specific items in Negeri 5 Menara into English, and (3) to reveal the reason why culture-specific items in novel Negeri 5 Menara translated as it is. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were linguistics features. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument was the documentary sheet. The result of this study revealed that: (1) the classifications of culture-specific items were found in novel Negeri 5 Menara namely ecology, material culture, social culture, organization, customs activities, concept, gesture and habit. (2) The ways of strategies used was related to its classification of culture-specific items. The strategies used to translate culture-specific items on novel Negeri 5 Menara into English was in different frequency. They were translation by a more general word (27.83%), translation by cultural substitution (16.49%), translation by paraphrase using a related word (10.30%), translation by paraphrase using unrelated word (2.06%), translation by omission (1.03%), translation by illustration (4.12%), and translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation (38.14%) as the dominant strategy. (3) The translator wanted the English translated version of Negeri 5 Menara easy to understand by the global reader. This translation was aimed to the acceptance of target reader.
