Abstract
This study deals with the impoliteness strategies of male and female studets. The objectives of the study were to find out: (1) the types of impoliteness strategies which uttered by male and female students at school interaction. (2) the responses of impoliteness strategies which uttered by male and female students and (3) the reason of using impoliteness which uttered by male and female students at school interaction. The study was descriptive qualitative. The subjects of the study were the four male and four female students in class VIII-3 at SMP Negeri 1 Tanjungbalai Asahan which had been choosen randomly. The data of the study were the students’ impolite utterances from the conversation at school. The instrument of ths study was a recording. The data were indentified, analyzed, and categorized based on Miles Huberman and Saldana’s theory (2014). The findings of the study show that: (1) there were five types of impoliteness strategies used by male and female students, namely 1) bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock impoliteness, and withhold politeness. Both of male and female students most dominantly used positive impoliteness. (2) there were six responses of impoliteness used by male students, namely no response, accepting responses, deffensive response, offensive response, ignoring response, and repeating response. No respon was dominantly used by male student. In other hand, there are five responses of impoliteness used by female students, namley no response, accepting responses, deffensive response, offensive response, ignoring response. Offensive respon was dominantly used by female students. (3) the reasons why the students used language impoliteness. They used language impoliteness because they wanted (a) to mock others (b) to vent negative feeling, (c) to show power, (d) to clarify something, (e) to show disagreement, and from the student’s perspective, the male students used language impoliteness to the their friend because they wanted to show their power as male. However, female students uttered impolite utterances because they could convey their anger and their negative feeling to the target frankly. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the students used language impoliteness to their friends intently to cause disharmony between them. Some suggestions are directed to those who are interested in understanding language impoliteness as found in the practice.
