Abstract
The thesis deals with Genre in Tests of The State Examination (Ujian Nasional: UN) and The State University Entrance Test (Seleksi Penerimaan Mahasiswa Baru: SPMB). This study attempts to investigate types of genres, the dominant genre used in the test, and the occurences of the difficult genre in both of the tests. The last three years of UN and SPMB were taken as the sample of the research, twenty texts from UN and seven texts from SPMB. Based on the obtained information, the data were analyzed. Systemic Functional Linguistic Theory was applied as the theoretical framework and the analysis was conducted by applying the pattern of schematic structures (Beginning^Middle^End) of each text found in UN and SPMB. The findings indicate that there were ten types of genres found in UN (News Item, Report, Exposition, Explanation, Recount, Narrative, Description, Review, Discussion, and Procedure) and three types of genres found in SPMB (Exposition, New Item, and Discussion). The findings also describe that the News Item is the dominant genre in UN, while in SPMB, the dominant type of genre is Exposition. In the UN, news item has high frequency while in the SPMB Exposition does.
