Abstract
This research deals with the development of English Reading Materials of vocational school, SMKN 1 Pematangsiantar, majoring Marketing. The aims of this research want to 1) know the existing English reading materials for students of Marketing Department at SMKN 1 Pematangsiantar, 2) develop English reading materials through authentic material which meet to the needs of Marketing Department students at SMKN 1 Pematangsiantar, 3) validate the reading materials by experts’ judgement. This Research was research and development (R&D) study proposed by Borg and Gall. The instrument for colleting data were questionnaire, interview and documentation. The analysis of data show that the existing English reading materials were not relevant with students of marketing department. The students needed materials which appropriate with their major. This research has a unit which are developed. Each of the units has diferent topics related to marketing department and students’ daily life. It also consist of four parts: starting up, orientation, assessment and glossary. Concerning the students’ need, the materials contain input in the form of authentic text, using vocabulary, completed full colour, picture and photograph and using essay structure in assessment. Therefore the new english reading materials and syllabus were developed in line with students and stakeholder’s need related to their major and workplace. After that the materials validated and suggested by two experts. The result of the data from the experts judgement, the mean score of the materials (85) was categorized good, valid, and relevant to the needs of students and stakeholders.
