Abstract

The study deals with code switching by the teacher of English subject in SMP Negeri 1 Air Putih. The purposes of the study were to find out types, function and the reason of teacher’s code switching. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were the teachers utterances which contained the code switching. The source of the data were three of English teacher of SMP Negeri 1 Air Putih collected by recording and interviewing.The result showed that there were three types of teacher’s code swithcing namely extra-sentential code switching, inter-sentential code switching, and intra-sentential code switching. There were six functions of teacher’s code switching, the first was to organize the classroom, second was to provide explanation of difficult word and important concept, third was to reassure the student, fourth was to praise the student, fifth was to remind the student, and the last was to encourage the student involvement. The reason why teacher switched the code in English teaching process was student’s English ability. Based on this finding it is suggested to other researcher to conduct the research about the code switching deeply.
