STRATEGIES IN THE TRANSLATION OF IDIOMS IN “NEGERI LIMA MENARA”

This research dealt with the idiom translation strategies. The objectives of this study were: (1) to describe strategies of translating idioms in Negeri Lima Menara; (2) to describe the context of idiom translation strategies applied in translating Negeri Lima Menara. The data were obtained from Negeri Lima Menara novel both its original and English version. This research applied qualitative research design. The data were collected through documentation and observation by reading the novel and listing the idioms found. The findings of this study have revealed that: 1). There were five types of idiom translation strategies found in Negeri Lima Menara novel found, they are using an idiom of similar meaning and form (37%), using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (39%), translation by paraphrase (18%), translation by omission (3%) and translation by description (3%). While, the compensation strategy was not found in this study; 2) the context applied in translating Indonesian idioms in Negeri Lima Menara novel into its English version were linguistic context, social cultural context and style context.
