Abstract
This study is concerned with the realization of Teacher Talk by the teacher and students in English classroom. The objectives of the study are to discover the types Teacher Talk realized by the English teacher and students in SMP Harapan 1 Medan, the most dominant types of Teacher Talk, the way of the English teacher and students realized them as they do and the reason why they realized them as they do. The study was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study was teacher talks utterances in English classroom of SMP Harapan 1 Medan as the source of data. The data were analyzed by Flanders’ Interaction Analysis Categories Theory (1970) to find the types of teacher talks, the way of the English teacher realized teacher talk and the reason of the teacher talk realized. The results of this study were (1) There were seven types of teacher talk realized in English classroom of SMP Harapan 1 Medan, namely Accept Feeling (8.8%), Praise and Encouragement (5.1%), Accepts or Uses Ideas of Students (4.5 0%), Asking Questions (19.8%), Teaching (6.3%), Giving Direction (12.6%), Criticizing or Justifying (1.1%). And there were 4 types of student talk, namely Student Talk Response (37.8), Student Talk Initiation (0.5%), Silence or Pause or Confusion (3.5%). (2) In performing the types of Teacher Talk in the classroom, the teacher uses his own ways such as verbal and non-verbally, indirect talk and direct talk. (3) The reasons of teacher talk realized in EFL classroom caused by their position and their responsible as a teacher.
