Abstract
This thesis deals with the English Politeness Principles used in Presidential Election Debate 2014. The objectives of the study were to find out the types of politeness principles in the 2014 presidential election debate, to know the realization of politeness principles and to know the reason of using politeness principles in the 2014 presidential election debate. This study uses the content analysis qualitative research. The source of the data is 2014 presidential election debate used random sampling.The technique for collecting data is documentary technique. The instrument for collecting data is recorder to record the conversation. Technique for analyzing data is content analysis. The findings show five types of politeness principles in the 2014 presidential election debate. The obedience of tact maxim was 21.44% with 18 utterances. The violation of tact maxim was 7.14% with 6 utterances. The obedience of generosity maxim was 10.71% with 9 utterances. The violation of generosity maxim was 0.00% with 0 utterances The obedience of approbation maxim was 16.66% with 14 utterances. The violation of approbation maxim was 15.47% with 13 utterances. The obedience of modesty maxim was 1.19% with 1 utterance. The violation of modesty maxim was 10.72% with 9 utterances. The obedience of agreement maxim was 8.33% with 7 utterances. The violation of agreement maxim was 8.34% with 7 utterances. It is found that realization of obedience and violation maxim are occurred namely tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim. It is found that the reason for the occurrences of politeness principle in the presidential election debate are (1) to find out affable in this way, the candidates utilized positively to make a pleasure relationship the society. And also the second one is (2) to cause offence between the speaker and interlocutor. In this way, the candidates are threatening, accusing, cursing, and reprimanding that cause violating the politeness principle. It is against to politeness that has purpose to cause offence.
