Abstract
This study concerned with Speech Act uttered in The Great Gatsby movie. This research was conducted by using qualitative method. It focuses on the usage of Speech Act in the movie. The data of this study were the utterances of the main character in the movie named Jay Gatsby. The utterances which contain Speech Act were identified and analyzed. The findings show that there are four types of Speech Act uttered in The Great Gatsby movie, namely: Commisives 28 utterances (28%), Reprsentatives 85 utterances (39), Directives 68 utterances (31), Expressives 36 utterances (17). It means Representatives is the type of Speech Act uttered dominantly by Gatsby. Representatives as the dominant type of Speech Act uttered in the movie shows how Gatsby dislikes of being looked down by other people and also tries to always keep his pride high.
