Abstract
This study discussed about the translation errors which is found in translating abstract from Indonesian into English by economic students Postgraduate Students of State University of Medan. The objectives of this research were 1) to find out kinds of translation errors i.e. errors in the production of verbs group, error in the distribution of verbs group, miscellaneous errors, errors in the use of preposition, errors in the use of articles, and errors in the use of questions found in the translated abstract of economic students; 2) to know the distribution of translation errors in abstract of economic students; 3) to know the factors influence the translator in doing the errors. In conducting the research, the writer used descriptive qualitative method. The instrument of collecting the data used document sheet. The translation errors were analyzed by descriptive technique. The result revealed that 1) the types of errors found in abstract of economic students are errors in the production of verb group, errors in the distribution of verbs group, miscellaneous errors, errors in the use of preposition and errors in the use of articles; 2) Errors in the production of verbs group is the most errors is 44,83%, while Miscellaneous errors is 39,66%, Errors in the use of preposition is 5,60%, errors in the use of articles is 4,74% and errors in the distribution of verbs group is 5,17%; 3) There are two factors affecting the errors, interlingual and intralingual. For Interlingual transfer, type lexical errors and syntactical errors are causal of errors in the abstract of economic postgraduate students of State University of Medan. Moreover for Intralingual transfer, overgeneralization, ignorance rule restriction, incomplete application of rules and false concept hypothesized happened in this study.
